Background of the Study
Taxation is a critical factor influencing the profitability of businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are often burdened by compliance costs and a lack of financial resources. In Maiduguri, Borno State, SMEs are integral to the local economy, providing employment opportunities and contributing to the growth of the informal sector (Ibrahim, 2023). However, SMEs in the region face numerous challenges, including the high cost of taxation, irregular tax policies, and the impact of the ongoing conflict in the northeastern part of Nigeria (Haruna, 2024). Understanding the effect of taxation on SME profitability is crucial for policymakers to design tax regimes that foster economic growth while minimizing the adverse impact on small businesses.
Despite the crucial role of SMEs in Nigeria's economic development, many studies have not sufficiently explored how taxation impacts their profitability, especially in conflict-prone regions like Borno State. Taxation can either act as a deterrent or as an enabler for SMEs depending on the rate, compliance requirements, and the availability of government incentives (Adeyemi, 2023). This study aims to explore the relationship between taxation and the profitability of SMEs in Maiduguri, Borno State, focusing on the challenges faced by these businesses in complying with tax laws and the effect of taxation on their overall financial performance.
Statement of the Problem
SMEs in Maiduguri, Borno State, contribute significantly to the region’s economy, yet they struggle with taxation-related issues, including high tax rates and a lack of tax incentives. The impact of these taxation challenges on the profitability of SMEs has not been adequately addressed in existing literature. Many small business owners report that the tax burden significantly reduces their profit margins, which in turn hampers their ability to reinvest in their businesses or expand operations (Bello, 2024). The lack of clear guidelines and the inconsistency in tax enforcement further complicate the situation. This research seeks to analyze the extent to which taxation affects the profitability of SMEs in Maiduguri and identify the factors that hinder effective tax compliance and its impact on business performance.
